The Principles were developed by the Sustainable Floristry Network in consultation with academic and industry experts. They recognise the three pillars of sustainability: people, planet and prosperity and support the UN Sustainable Development Goals and circular economy models.

We exclusively use Australian‑grown naturally coloured flowers from Sydney Flower Market so they can be composted. We don't use floral foam (a single-use plastic) and prioritise reuse in our designs.

Hello, I'm Bec

Sustainable Floristry Network (SFN) and Cert III Florist and Founder of Not Just a Pretty Flower.

I came to floristry through a career change, moving from forensics/financial crime consulting into social enterprise. Founding Not Just a Pretty Flower in 2025 reignited the sense of wonder and appreciation for nature I had growing up and I haven't looked back!

I grew up on Awabakal land in Lake Macquarie, NSW, and now live and create in Maroubra on beautiful Gadigal and Bidjigal land. My love of gardens, flowers, and nature began early - picking Double Delight roses and lavender at my grandparents’ property.

When I’m not creating, you’ll find me out in nature: running Malabar headland, searching for nudibranchs, practicing French at my local café, or rescuing interesting finds from the roadside. I love working with creatives, social enterprises, and second‑hand pieces, because character and stories matter.

Flowers are perishable and the lifespan of flowers differs between varieties and types of flowers.

To care for your flowers:

Re-cut stems and change the water every couple of days. This helps the flower stems continuously take up water by keeping the water vessels open and preventing the build-up of bacteria, which causes the vessels to become blocked (source Sustainable Floristry Network: https://www.sustainablefloristry.org/resources/floral-foam-facts/)

Keep flowers out of direct sunlight and air conditioning 

Floral foam is a single-use plastic packaging item which is still widely used in the floristry industry due to its convenience storing water, holding flower stems and availability.

‘Floral foam is made from two chemicals considered to be hazardous to humans: phenol and formaldehyde. These substances are mixed with non-hazardous substances to produce the final product. A recent independent study by RMIT University in Australia showed that floral foam is a problem for aquatic animals. All animals in the study selected floral foam as a food source. The study showed that toxic compounds can leach out of the floral foam and into the surrounding water. Both consuming foam and being exposed to water surrounding floral foam particles was shown to cause harm to the aquatic animals studied.

Floral foam enters the natural environment when water containing foam is poured down a drain, the foam is discarded into a garden or soil, mixed with green waste or buried on top of a coffin.’
