How we create

We design following Sustainable Floristry Principles

  • Choose better flowers
  • Design out waste
  • Invest in ethics
  • Communicate with community

The Principles were developed by the Sustainable Floristry Network in consultation with academic and industry experts. They recognise the three pillars of sustainability: people, planet and prosperity and support the UN Sustainable Development Goals and circular economy models.

We exclusively use Australian‑grown naturally coloured flowers from Sydney Flower Market so they can be composted. We don't use floral foam (a single-use plastic) and prioritise reuse in our designs such as sourcing second-hand or hiring vessels.

Our Philosophy

Let the flowers do the talking

We translate feeling and intention through nature. We are guided by the seasons, stories, circularity and design in harmony with spaces and context. We see people in flowers; everything we create is personalised and grounded in a belief in style and timelessness over trends and respect for nature.

Hello, I'm Bec

Sustainable Floristry Network (SFN) and Cert III Florist and Founder of Not Just a Pretty Flower.

I came to floristry through a career change, moving from forensics/financial crime consulting into social enterprise. Founding Not Just a Pretty Flower in 2025 reignited the sense of wonder and appreciation for nature I had growing up and I haven't looked back!

I grew up on Awabakal land in Lake Macquarie, NSW, and now live and create in Maroubra on beautiful Gadigal and Bidjigal land. My love of gardens, flowers, and nature began early - picking Double Delight roses and lavender at my grandparents’ property.

When I’m not creating, you’ll find me out in nature: running Malabar headland, searching for nudibranchs, practicing French at my local café, or rescuing interesting finds from the roadside. I love working with creatives, social enterprises, and second‑hand pieces, because character and stories matter.

I believe in the healing power of nature, collaboration over competition, and using business for good. If you’d like to connect about flowers, nature, sustainability, creativity, career change, or collaboration, reach out at hello@notjustaprettyflower.com.au or on Instagram.

"Bec was truly amazing to work with from start to finish. She understood what we were going for early on and helped refine it in a way we hadn’t quite been able to ourselves. When we saw the designs coming together the day before, we were genuinely blown away. It was beyond what we had even expected, and even more perfect on the day of our wedding. The detail and care Bec put into each bunch, as well as fruits and other accessories we requested, brought our vision to life, and at the end of the day, she wrapped all our flowers up so we could continue enjoying them for the following week." "Bec is affable, engaging and makes it her business to familiarise herself with the venue to ensure she selects the perfect colour palette and style to complement the space. She is discerning and very professional. There is great attention to detail and the end result is on point. Would highly recommend."

Alana Hay
Managing Director, Milestone Creative

"Bec is an amazing floral stylist, she absolutely nailed the brief which was an oversized arch, built of branches, foliage and two entry pathways made of logs, branches etc with some branded elements we created as "branded flowers". It looked excellent. Bec sourced all of the branches from around the parklands, so it was authentic and natural and fitted the brief perfectly. She was an absolute delight to work with."

Stephanie Van Loon
ReLove event manager/volunteer

"Bec has done the florals for 4 big charity events for me, and she delivers perfectly every time. Selects incredible quality, sustainable flowers, is attentive to detail around theming, works seamlessly with our team and is just a pleasure to work with. She has worked to tight bump in deadlines with ease by curating the right flowers to work with our timings. I love she uses only Australian grown in her arrangements, and no plastic to be seen. Highly recommend selecting Not Just a Pretty Flower for your events!" (Photo by Elin Bandmann)

Flowers are perishable and the lifespan of flowers differs between varieties and types of flowers.

To care for your flowers:

Re-cut stems and change the water every couple of days. This helps the flower stems continuously take up water by keeping the water vessels open and preventing the build-up of bacteria, which causes the vessels to become blocked (source Sustainable Floristry Network: https://www.sustainablefloristry.org/resources/floral-foam-facts/)

Keep flowers out of direct sunlight and air conditioning

Floral foam is a single-use plastic packaging item which is still widely used in the floristry industry due to its convenience storing water, holding flower stems and availability.

‘Floral foam is made from two chemicals considered to be hazardous to humans: phenol and formaldehyde. These substances are mixed with non-hazardous substances to produce the final product. A recent independent study by RMIT University in Australia showed that floral foam is a problem for aquatic animals. All animals in the study selected floral foam as a food source. The study showed that toxic compounds can leach out of the floral foam and into the surrounding water. Both consuming foam and being exposed to water surrounding floral foam particles was shown to cause harm to the aquatic animals studied.

Floral foam enters the natural environment when water containing foam is poured down a drain, the foam is discarded into a garden or soil, mixed with green waste or buried on top of a coffin.’
